Holidays and weekdays, aristocrats and servants, lights and shadows.
These opposites have defined the past centuries in almost the same way as they do today. Even tourists who have visited many palaces of Hungary and those of other European countries, have not learned anything of the world behind the scenes, such as the world of the aristocrats and servants that resided there. Without this background knowledge, one cannot envision the splendour and glory that once existed inside the homes of aristocrats. The Almásy Mansion provides this background information in several exhibits and hands-on stations within the palace, which enrich the visitors’ experience.
Experience. Adventure. Discovery.
The Almásy Mansion is the first one in Hungary to host a theatrical play in as early as 1746. Several generations of the Erkel family held recitals here, and Ferenc Erkel composed parts of several of his operas in the park of the Almásy Palace. Ten of the thirteen martyrs of Arad laid down their arms here. It was here that Mihály Munkácsy first became acquainted with the art of painting. The exhibition uses state-of-the-art interactive technology to reveal fascinating details and secrets of the daily lives of the aristocrats and staff who once lived here. The Almásy Mansion Visitor Centre in Gyula was ranked among the 40 best museums in Europe in 2018.
