Göndöcs Garden

Visitors of this lovely park can cherish the sight of centuries-old oak and sycamore trees. Formerly known as Népkert (People’s Garden), the park was established in the summer of 1886 after replenishing the floodplains of the Kis-Körös river. One of Gyula’s most beloved green spaces was given its current name in 1894. The park accommodates several important buildings, including the Vigadó Event Centre, the Erkel Ferenc Cultural Centre and the Kohán Art Gallery. Other points of interest in the Göndöcs Garden include a 42-metre-high water tower and the 20th Century Heroes’ Monument, a mosaic artwork by György Kohán. The bronze bust of Benedek Göndöcs, the founder and namesake of the park, was placed in the niche on the side of the Vigadó.
