Gyula Tennis Leisure and Sport Club

Tennis has been a popular sport in Békés Couny for a long time. The first, long-awaited, lawn tennis club was founded in 1896, when they built the first tennis court.

In the 1920s there were three tennis courts in Gyula and an additional three were opened in the following years: one in the secondary grammar school, one for the military officers and one in the Göndöcs Garden. All of them saw a bustling tennis scene from early spring to late autumn.

After World War 2, an indoor clay court, suitable for international tournaments, was built in the Lovarda (Riding Hall). Today, the six-court tennis complex in Zrínyi Square is the centre of tennis in Gyula.

In the summer of 2017, the tennis club organized a very successful international tournament. In 2018, the sport complex was expanded, by adding two more clay courts for the upcoming ITF tours.
