Ladics House

The single-storey Baroque townhouse was built in the early 19th century as a notary’s residence.

A newlywed couple, Dr. György Ladics and his wife moved into the house first, and later their descendants lived there until it was transformed into a museum. Five generations of the Ladics family, caring about traditions, preserved the furniture, everyday objects, clothing and memorabilia that reflect their way of life and intellectual heritage. After purchasing the building and the collection, the city of Gyula established a museum. It’s no exaggeration to say that the legacy of the Ladics family is one of Gyula’s most precious assets. It boasts significant historical records of the life of rural bourgeoisise during the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy and the first half of the 20th century. On the one hand, there is a nationwide network of rural houses that show the lifestyle and households of peasant families, as well as many beautifully furnished noble and aristocratic homes showcasing the other end of the social spectrum. On the other hand, the Ladics House is the only fully furnished home that bears witness to the Hungarian bourgeoisie.

There is no other comprehensive collection of memorabilia, objects and archives in Hungary.

The inheritance includes the Ladics family’s 19th century townhouse with its entire furnishing, the family’s household items and personal belongings, a library, and the family archive. In the Ladics House visitors can gain valuable insights into the middle-class culture during the Dual Monarchy and the Interwar period.

The complex development of the Ladics House was implemented within the framework of a grant application, the specifics of which are as follows:

The objective of the project was to boost the tourism of the Municipality of Gyula by improving cultural and active tourism elements that are based on the features of the region. The project included the construction of a missing stretch of the bike path network in Nagyváradi Road. As for cultural tourism, the development of the Ladics House and the 100-Year-Old Confectionery has been carried out. The aim of the project was to renovate the two properties in order to make them must-see attractions to everyone visiting Gyula.
