Munkácsy Quarter

The development of the Munkácsy Quarter, aimed to preserve the intellectual heritage of the painter Mihály Munkácsy, began in 2017 within the framework of the Modern Cities Programme. The Békéscsaba collection of Mihály Munkácsy's relics, sketches and paintings formed an excellent basis for establishing the first cultural district of the Southern Great Plains in the county seat of Békés.

The multi-phased programme covers buildings, institutions, and public spaces.

The permanent exhibition of the Munkácsy Museum was renewed as part of the development of the Munkácsy Quarter. Now, visitors can see the ‶Mihály Munkácsy - Triumph of a Genius″ exhibition.

Another important element of the Munkácsy Art Quarter, the Omaszta Mansion, presently known as the Munkácsy Memorial House has also undergone renovation. This was the childhood home of Munkácsy and was an important place during his formative years. In the renovated Memorial House, modern technology and new, interactive spaces evoke Munkácsy's childhood, the values, customs and everyday life of bourgeois culture.

The development of the Munkácsy Quarter included the installation of three public artworks commemorating the artist.

These sculptures that are related to or inspired by Munkácsy are located in various places. There is a full-length bronze sculpture of Munkácsy on the steps of the Mihály Munkácsy Museum. In the Martyrs of Arad Park there is a statue reminiscent of his painting, “Woman Carrying Twigs″, and in Omaszta Park there is a sculpture inspired by Munkácsy’s art.

The complete development of the Munkácsy Quarter was finished in 2023.
