Permanent exhibition of Mihály Schriffert

Mihály Schriffert, a wood carving artist has a permanent exhibition in Gyula, showcasing his artwork. Woodcarving runs in his family, he inherited his talent from his grandfather. After becoming a disabled pensioner, he gathered his tools of the trade and started carving. Initially, he made pieces of furniture, religious figures and tombstones, later his interest gravitated towards woodturned objects, such as flasks, boats, zithers and furniture. In 1980, he established a woodcarving workshop in Gyula. Schriffert had several group and solo exhibitions across Hungary, in Tokaj, Tata, Mezőhegyes, Sződliget, Kecskemét, Budapest, Nyíregyháza, Debrecen, Békéscsaba and Székesfehérvár. In addition to Hungary, his artwork has been exhibited in many other countries, such as Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Italy, Germany, Serbia, France, the USA and Canada. In recognition of his achievements, he was the recipient of a commemorative plaque awarded by the city of Gyula and was given the title of Folk Craftsman in 2004. In 2001, he was given the Outsanding Citizen of Gyula title.
