Saint Joseph’s Church was constructed between 1863 and 1866 and it was designed in the late Baroque style by József Nuszbeck. The church showcases Neoclassical features as well, and during renovations elements of the Romanesque style were added. St Joseph’s Church was the third church built for the German community of Gyula.
It is located in the former Német-Gyula (German-Gyula) neighbourhood, which was later named ‶Józsefváros″ after its patron saint. For its construction, building materials from a demolished chapel and, according to an urban legend, stones from the nearby Franciscan church were used.
The church boasts two valuable Baroque wooden statues from the 18th century, depicting Saint John of Nepomuk and the Virgin Mary. The altarpiece of Saint Joseph is the artwork of Antal Szegedi Hirt, while the secco above the altar was painted by Lajos Ramold in 1924.
