Saint Nicholas’ church is a unique monument of Gyula’s cultural heritage. The Nicoresti family played a crucial role in its construction. The first Romanian orthodox church was built of wood in 1721. It took ten years to build the present church, the construction was completed in 1812. However, the tower was finished much later, in 1854. The church is 33 metres long and 14 metres wide, the height is 39 metres to the roof, and the cross on top of the tower is at 42 metres. The iconostasis of Saint Nicholas’ Cathedral is a true masterpiece. The icons, which are the creations of Arsa Teodorovici, are decorated with rose motifs carved from wood and covered in gold. The 3-metre-tall cross at the entrance has been dedicated to the memory of Lazar Bogdan since 1869. The interior of the church was renovated by the painter, Béla Predmerszky in 1928. Architecturally, the building is a mixture of late Baroque and Classicism.
