Béni Ferenczy’s life-size bronze statue of the poet is located in Petőfi Square. It was created in 1960 and it marks the beginning of a new era in sculpture and the fine arts, in general.
The cliché-free, lifelike artwork has become a reference point and sets the gold standard for sculptors and commemorative sculpture. The statue was originally intended for the courtyard of the Ambrosiana in Milan, but it was eventually displayed in Gyula and only a replica was sent to Italy. The pathos-free rendering of the revolutionary poet and the raging emotions that are reflected on his face make the statue seem to be in motion. The original plaster cast of the statue of Petőfi is in the possession of the Hungarian National Gallery.
