The Hungarian Trade and Hospitality Museum’s permanent exhibition can be viewed at the Harruckern György Vocational School. The tiny museum opened in May, 2016 and is a unique addition to the colourful array of attractions Gyula boasts.
The history of the museum dates back to 1983, when the idea of setting up the exhibition was initiated by György Ábrahám, who was the director of the Food Retail Company at the time. Within a year, residents of Gyula and employees of the company, including veteran professionals, collected nearly 500 objects and documents. The news of the initiative aroused the interest of old trading families, who also contributed to the collection.
The exhibition is one of the cultural rarities Gyula has to offer, along with the 100-Year-Old Confectionery, Ladics House and the Meat Industry Collection. The items exhibited at the museum evoke the bourgeois milieu of an era. Visitors can also explore the history of the former Hussars’ Barrack (the building that houses the museum now) in a small display area.
